Q... 1969

Q... was a surreal television comedy sketch show from Spike Milligan which ran from 1969 to 1982 on BBC2. There were six series in all, the first five numbered from Q5 to Q9, and a final series titled There's a Lot of It About. The first and third series ran for seven episodes, and the others for six episodes, each of which was 30 minutes long. Various reasons have been suggested for the title. One possibility is that it was inspired by the project to construct the Cunard liner QE2, launched in September 1967, which was dubbed Q4. Another theory is that Milligan was inspired by the BBC 6-point technical quality scale of the time, where "Q5" was severe degradation to picture or sound, and "Q6" was complete loss of sound or vision. This was extended by some engineering departments to a 9-point scale, finishing at "Q9". According to Milligan's autobiography, the final series was renamed There's a Lot of It About after the BBC felt the public might find Q10 too confusing.

Ultra Q 1966

Ultra Q is a tokusatsu SF/kaiju series made in the tradition of Toho's many tokusatsu sci-fi/horror films. Produced in black and white by Tokyo Broadcasting System/Tsuburaya Productions, this is actually the first of the long-running Ultra Series, and was broadcast on Tokyo Broadcasting System from January 2 to July 3, 1966, with a total of 28 episodes. This series was followed a week later by the more popular Ultraman, the second Ultra Series. Ultra Q can be described as a half-hour Toho kaiju film. Although series creator Eiji Tsuburaya intended this series to be more like The Twilight Zone and focus less on the monsters, TBS convinced Eiji to add more monsters onto the show, as Godzilla and Gamera were very popular at the time. This series predates The X-Files, with continuing characters who investigate strange supernatural phenomena, be they giant monsters, aliens, ghosts, and other assorted calamities. The single best comparison to any American TV show is to The Outer Limits, which in its original form generally featured a monster-of-the-week story.

It began life in the summer of 2005 running for two hours on Sunday afternoons. The initial show was presented by Caroline Flack and Yemi Sawyerr and was a blend of music videos and interactive video games that could be played by viewers to win prizes such as VIP gig tickets. Games included Pop Cannon – viewers had to guess the power needed to fire Robbie Williams out of a cannon into a bucket. Pop Trash – callers must work out which garbage bin Christina Aguilera was hiding in. It was similar in style to MTV Select but with caler competitions instead of caller song requests. In subsequent series the show developed into more of a quiz caller format which had slots from 12 midnight until 3:00am. Lasting a whole three hours, each show was hosted by a single presenter; unusual for its genre. The main style of game for this show was a tower game, with ten potential answers relating to a themed clue. Game entry was by players either dialling the number on screen or via a random callback via the free web entry route. Viewers were also invited to e-mail the presenter in the studio, selected messages being read out on air.
